Project abstract

The increasing demand for high speed access to the internet and for a reliable Quality of Service (QoS) requires new strategies and technologies for the Access Network of the future. Although the internet per se appears as a homogenous network, the number of nodes between the home and the backbone is increasing. With a fiber-based last mile, one additional node has to be implemented in a street cabinet or in the basement of the house. If smart metering is considered, another additional node acting as machine-to-machine (M2M) router servicing the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is required. Home gateways with VoIP and HDTV streaming functionality are the next infrastructure which has to be addressed. This technology development, together with an appropriate hardware infrastructure protocols out of the TR69 family, will be essential for the maintenance of the last mile and hence QoS.

Our innovative project Fiber Integrated Termination (FIT) will focus on the following objectives and results:

  • GPON + AON configurable optical line/ network termination with
    • Gateway functionality to central office and home area networks
    • On-chip power calibration, symbol accurate transmit power measurement and regulation
    • Optical interface up to 1 Gbps (active Ethernet, POF etc.)
    • Optimized power and CoC compliance
  • Optical powered fiber monitoring
    • Optical network fault monitoring (low end OTDR), rogue ONT detection, etc.
  • Open Interfaces and new service protocols permitting service providers to offer new business models by allowing the access network to enter the home
  • Development of scalable POF Interfaces
