Description and expertise of the organisation:
First Mile Networks Ltd (FMN) is a leading expert in Fibre To The Home (FTTH)/Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) in the UK and has been at the forefront of the promotion of this technology since 2003. FTTH facilitates the provision of high speed broadband at speeds of 100Mbit/s and beyond, with massive benefits for all users including businesses, the public sector and residential users.

We have advised numerous organisations and businesses regarding this technology, many of whom have been either property developers or city based promoters. We advise on any aspect of Broadband and FTTH, including commercial, financial, marketing and technology considerations, often culminating in the preparation of a Business Plan.

We have also been involved in the implementation of FTTH and broadband services, the most prestigious of which being the new Wembley development promoted by Quintain Estates & Development Plc (a contract won by FMN in 2007 against stiff industry competition from the likes of BT and Siemens etc).

FMN's clients typically include real estate owners seeking to build appropriate technology into their properties, and telecommunications companies seeking to expand their customer base by deploying advanced technologies into large properties and portfolios.

FMN has specialist expertise in all aspects of telecommunications, and particularly expertise in delivering advanced services to mixed use developments, primarily by using fibre to the premises (FTTP), but also using wireless technologies.

We have very close technology links with various Universities including University College London, Queen Mary College London, and the University of Essex. This close relationship provides FMN with the ability to stay at the forefront of technical developments. Indeed our expertise in this area has been recently recognised by the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board who have awarded a significant funding for a feasibility study into next generation FTTx networks using open access and end to end wavelength routing and switching.

Research interests / Project ideas
We have two potential projects for PIANO+:
1. Demonstration of 100Mbit/s to the end user using WDM-PONS together with open access architecture
2. Demonstration of 1Gbit/s to the end user using wdm-pons, with end to end user connectivity at the wavelength level using wavelength switching and routing and an open access architecture.
