Description and expertise of the organisation:
The optoelectronics group in the department of electronics and electrical engineering, University of Glasgow has a long track record of working on integrated semiconductor optoelectronics for telecommunications. We have developed a new integration technology for integrating electronic functionality on the same chip as optoelectronic devices to make OptoElectronic Integrated Circuits (OEICs). The technology is based on the integration of a resonant tunnelling diode (RTD) and for example we have integrated an RTD with a laser diode and have made an RTD-LD chip with large bandwidth electronic gain. The RTD-LD is part of a a family OEICs and for more details see:-

Research interests / Project ideas
We have demonstrated the potential of this technology by converting a phase modulated wireless signal to a phase modulated optical sub-carrier signal using a hybrid version of the RTD-OEIC and are seeking partners to make single chip versions -for high data rate wireless access networks.
