Description and expertise of the organisation:
The staff of the Institute of Broadband Communications (IBK), Vienna University of Technology, has a strong background in the broad area of communication networks in general, and optical networks in particular. Within this area, current issues are: novel optical network architectures, access control protocols and architectures, energy efficiency of communication networks and subsystems, QoS differentiation and traffic engineering in general (MPLS, GMPLS, NGN). The research is focused on theoretical and simulative investigations of novel designs and the validation of new subsystems and techniques for optical signal transmission and payload processing. The IBK is active in the FP7 EU network of Excellence “BONE” and in a number of projects with partners form industry, and participated in COST Actions 239 and 266 related to photonic networks and in the FP6 Network of Excellence “e-Photon/ONe”.

Research interests / Project ideas
- Novel architectures and protocols for in-house, access and core networks
- Performance evaluation of reach-extended passive optical networks (PONs)
- Merging access and metropolitan area networks
- Energy efficiency in access networks
